Major League Baseball
Colorado at Kansas City
When: 8:15 PM ET, Tuesday, August 22, 2017
Where: Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri

The Colorado Rockies are clinging to the top wild-card spot in the National League, although their play away from home hasn't done them any favors of late. The Rockies begin a six-game road trip on Tuesday with the opener of a three-game series against the Kansas City Royals.

Colorado, which owns a half-game lead over Arizona in the race for the top wild card, has dropped seven of 10 overall and 21 of its last 27 on the road after beginning the season with a 24-10 mark away from home. Mark Reynolds went deep for the third time in his last five starts in Sunday's 8-4 loss to Milwaukee, improving to 7-for-19 with nine RBIs and five runs scored in that stretch. Kansas City has won five of eight to sit within seven games of American League Central-leading Cleveland and 1 1/2 behind the second AL wild-card spot. Alcides Escobar has answered a disastrous 0-for-18 stretch by piecing together an 11-game hitting streak, highlighted by his season high-tying three RBI performance in Sunday's 7-4 victory over the Indians.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH Jon Gray (5-2, 4.74 ERA) vs. Royals LH Danny Duffy (7-8, 3.82)

Gray has allowed 11 earned runs in his last five outings and improved to 3-1 with a 3.72 ERA in his last six after permitting two runs on five hits over six innings in Wednesday's 17-2 rout of Atlanta. The 25-year-old benefited from 14 runs of support through the first five innings and breezed to his third quality start in his last four trips to the mound. Gray hasn't fared well on the road in his career, posting a 4-11 mark with a 4.93 ERA in 26 starts.

Duffy saw his winless stretch extend to four outings on Wednesday after receiving a no-decision at Oakland. The 28-year-old yielded four runs on six hits in that encounter but also struck out eight for the third straight trip to the mound. Duffy has pitched much better at home this season, posting a 3-4 mark with a 3.14 ERA at Kauffman Stadium as opposed to a 4-4 record with a 4.30 ERA on the road.

1. Kansas City 3B Mike Moustakas has scored 11 times during his 11-game hitting streak.

2. Rockies RHP Greg Holland, who played six seasons with the Royals, returns to Kauffman Stadium for the first time since signing a one-year deal in the winter.

3. Kansas City C Salvador Perez (right intercostal strain) is expected to be activated from the disabled list in either the series opener or Wednesday's game.

PREDICTION: Royals 4, Rockies 2
